Obituary

Monday, September 12, 2011: Rosary, 7 p.m., Assumption Catholic Church, Dwight

Tuesday, September 13, 2011: Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m., Assumption Catholic Church, Dwight, followed by graveside service and interment at Assumption Catholic Cemetery with military honors. Food and fellowship in the parish hall following the graveside service.

Edward J. Matulka, 89, of Dwight, NE died September 9, 2011 at the Bellevue Medical Center, Bellevue, NE. He was born October 2, 1921 to August and Rose (Trousil) Matulka of Ulysses, NE, and graduated from Assumption Catholic High School, Dwight, NE in 1938.

After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he farmed west of Dwight. Ed married Dorothy M. Mancheski of Green Bay, WI, October 1, 1949. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 110, Dwight; Assumption Catholic Church; Brainard Farmers Co-op, David City Knights of Columbus, and Dwight Volunteer Fire Department.

An avid fisherman, he enjoyed raising chickens, ducks and geese; planting trees on his property and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Great-grandchildren: Justin, Emma and Grace Matulka of Seward, NE; Kristin and Nathan Pence of Seward, NE; Jayden and Gabe Delle of Bookings, SD.

Sister-in-law: Eldeen Matulka of Raymond, NE; many nieces and nephews.

Service

Edward J. Matulka served in the 555th Engineer Heavy Ponton Battalion, activated March 1, 1943 at Camp White, Oregon. Basic training began March 22, 1943 with 494 recruits at Fort Sheridan, IL.

Ed's future brother-in-law, Edwin H. Mancheski, also served with him in the Army.
