Darrell L. “Cass” Harvat of North Bend, was born in Omaha on May 2,
1928, to Harry and Ethel (Rose) Harvat. Cass graduated from Omaha South High School and
served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. He arrived in Korea on his
22nd birthday.
Cass worked for Cudahy Meat Packing in Omaha and in the Douglas
County Assessors Office. He moved to North Bend in 1991 and was active in the VFW and AmVets.
Cass had served on the board of the Morse Bluff - North Bend Area Veterans Memorial Park. On
Veteran’s Day 2006 Cass spoke at the North Bend Central Jr. - Sr. High student assembly
encouraging students to consider how decisions they make affect others. He gave as an example
how he decided to make a transfer while he was in Korea, the man who replaced him was killed
two weeks later. Cass also said that one of the best decisions he ever made was moving to
North Bend. His daughter Laureen said he gave his heart and soul to North
Bend.
Cass passed away Aug. 8 at the Fremont Area Medical Center. His body
was cremated and the ashes were scattered by his family on the lake he lived beside south of
North Bend. He is survived by daughters GiGi Connolly of Phoenix, Ariz., DeLinda Garza of
Ashland, Laureen Quistad of Tampa, Fla., Bethany Terry, Jodean Mallory, both of Phoenix,
Ariz; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A Memorial Gathering was held Aug. 15
at the Morse Bluff-North Bend Area Veteran’s Memorial Park with Military Honors by VFW Post
8223, AmVets Post 20 and American Legion Post 340. The family requests memorials to VFW Post
8223 of North Bend or to the Veterans Memorial Park Fund.
